The Ararat Rural City Council and the Department of Sustainability and Environment identified Lake Bolac as a priority Innovation Project to be sewered through the Country Towns Water Supply and Sewerage Program to minimise the risk of environment damage from septic tanks and grey water.

Construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant has been completed and the laying of the sewer mains is currently underway.

The project is expected to be completed and commissioned by the end of 2011.
