What is turbidity?

What is turbidity? Turbidity is caused by the presence in the water of fine suspended matter such as clay, silt, colloidal particles, plankton and other microscopic organisms. Turbidity is a measurement of the light scattering property of water, and the degree of scattering is dependent on the amount, size and composition of the suspended matter. Higher turbidity levels are often associated with higher levels of disease-causing microorganisms such as viruses, parasites and some bacteria.
