Responsibilities

Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water (trading as GWMWater) is a government-owned Statutory Authority established on 1 July 2004 under the Water Act 1989. Under the Act, GWMWater must provide, manage, operate and protect water supply and sewerage systems for urban customers including collection, storage, treatment, transfer and distribution functions.

We are also empowered to supply water to rural domestic and stock customers, and provide bulk water to ‘supply by agreement’ rural customers. Our responsibilities to rural customers also cover water supply to irrigation customers (when available) around Horsham and Murtoa; and the ownership and operation of a range of headworks and bulk water supply assets.

From 1 July 2007 the Water Industry (Governance) Act took affect and as a consequence of this change GWMWater became Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water Corporation, still trading as GWMWater. Under the changed legislative framework the compliance and accountability framework will be more closely aligned to the requirements of corporations law.
