As part of GWMWater's commitment to providing customers suitable drinking water supplies, the organisation has an ongoing major capital works program that includes constructing water treatment plants and disinfection plants in the region’s towns. GWMWater’s region has 12 water treatment plants and 17 disinfection plants. Drinking water GWMWater supplies fully treated water to 20 towns, which is equivalent to 76% of urban customers. A further 15 towns receive water that has been partially treated by disinfection. A further 36 towns receive untreated water supplies and of these, 12 have been identified for possible water quality improvements. Of the remaining 24 towns receiving untreated water, many have fewer than 100 people and 18 of these have fewer than 50. Conventional water treatment technology is not an economic solution for these communities and GWMWater is working closely with customers to explore innovative ways to improve water quality in their towns. GWMWater manages potential health risks in all towns receiving untreated water through a strategy developed in consultation with the Department of Human Services and the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
